Spaced Out Studio

We are a family-run mid-century modern furniture shop based in Chicago! We import Scandinavian furniture made in the mid-1900s and restore to original condition. Inspired by the very pieces we revitalize, we now also design modern handmade furniture.

Our Refinishing Philosophy:

When we get a vintage piece in we walk around it and determine exactly what needs to be done before it finds a new home. Obviously the drawers need to be working smoothly, it needs to be clean and all damage repaired.

We determine if the finish is salvageable and only if it is not do we sand, stain, and add a finish lacquer. A lot of the time we can avoid a complete refinishing process by rejuvenating teak with an oil treatment.

We only completely refinish when the piece is a necessary candidate.

We want to consider our footprint and the impact we have, creating more harmful waste and know that our customers appreciate a little wear. Nobody’s perfect and neither should be expected from your 60 year old furniture.

But when we must...
